Mohican Design and Construction

DESIGN

The idea behind the Mohican K-1 was to create a kayak that was as fast as an ICF racing K-1 with its powerful and efficient paddling position, but more stable and seaworthy. After two years of intensive design work using our design codes, towing tank test data, and all that we had learned making medal winning Olympic boats, the result has exceeded even our expectations.

The Mohican excels in the USCA Unlimited Marathon Kayak division, Multisport racing, and Surfski competition. Since its introduction in 2006 it has helped many paddlers achieve their personal best times over a wide range of courses and won numerous races including the USCA 2006 National Marathon Championships with the fastest time over the course for all classes. Many intermediate paddlers find its stability only a small adjustment from the faster sea and touring kayaks that they have been using.

CONSTRUCTION

Standard construction is autoclave cured carbon/core/epoxy for a new level of strength, stiffness and light weight. A range of options will customize the Mohican to your preferences. The standard rudder is under the boat for best control in open water conditions. For shallow water a kick up rudder that automatically sheds weeds is an option or both can be supplied. A 6″ inspection port behind the cockpit is useful for storing a PFD and water and can be fitted with a canvas bag to keep valuables and food handy. You have a choice of tiller or foot pedal steering. Bungees can be rigged for carrying gear on deck. The standard finish is a blue linear polyurethane gelcoat that is tough and highly UV resistant, making a cover un-necessary.

SPEED AND STABILITY

It used to be that you had to give up speed and good paddling ergonomics to get stability. The Mohican offers enough stability for the intermediate paddlers to improve their technique or the experienced paddler to propel the boat at maximum power in all conditions while setting a new speed standard.
